Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring with me to an appointment?

In order to design the perfect cake for you, I need to have as much information as possible. Any photos of your wedding dress or bouquets you like, your wedding invitation, pictures of cakes you like. All these will be helpful and give me a feeling of your style. If you don't have many visual things to show me, we'll talk about your plans for your wedding and you can describe things to me so I get a feel for the mood of your wedding.

May I have a tasting?

Yes, you'll need to make an appointment for a tasting. I'll have a few different flavors of cake and fillings for you to sample. If you have a specific cake you'd like to taste please let me know and I will try to accommodate you. My consultation space is small so I ask that you limit the number of friends and relatives who come with you to three or four.

Do you have a portfolio of wedding cakes you have created?

Yes, you may view my selections when you come for your appointment. I also invite you to look at the photos on the web site prior to your visit.

How do you come up with a unique cake for me?

If you have a photo of a cake you like, show it to me and tell me what you like about it. If you like one of the cakes in my portfolio, tell me what details you like about it. I'll use this as an inspiration to design a cake just for you.

How early can I reserve my wedding cake?

I will reserve your cake up to a year in advance.

How much do your cakes cost?

This is a hard question because it depends on your design. I can give you an estimate by phone or email. After we have agreed on the design of your cake I will give you a price. The larger the cake and the more detailed it is, the more it will cost.

May I have more than one flavor in my wedding cake?

Certainly! You may even have each tier a different flavor. There is a small additional charge for changing the flavors of the cake. However, I don't charge more for changes in the filling flavors. For example: You might choose to have your cake all butter cake and have lemon curd filling in one tier, chocolate mousse in one tier and raspberry preserves in a third tier.

What is your most popular cake flavor?

Two of the most popular wedding cake flavors among my customers is the Butter Cake and Vanilla Almond. Both compliment a wide variety of fillings. If you like choolate cake, the chocolate fudge cake is wonderful. Once covered in butter cream or fondant you won't be able to tell it's chocolate underneath.

What is rolled fondant?

Rolled fondant is a sugar dough that is rolled out like a pie crust and used to cover cakes. Unlike some cake designers, I first ice my cakes with butter cream and then cover them with fondant. That way you get the wonderful flavor of the butter cream and the elegant look of the fondant. Fondant tastes very much like a marshmallow but denser. When skillfully applied it has the appearance of porcelain which makes it perfect for a wedding cake. It can be embossed, molded and decorated in an infinite number of ways. Cakes covered in rolled fondant hold up very well in hot and humid conditions.

Do I have to get my cake covered in fondant?

No. Your cake can be iced with butter cream alone if you prefer, although the design possibilities are more limited with this choice of frosting. Cakes frosted with butter cream are very beautiful.

Can I use fresh flowers on my cake?

Yes. I can provide fresh flowers at an additional cost or you can use your own florist. Please let your florist know you will be using them on you wedding cake. I will work with your florist to coordinate delivery time and quantity of flowers needed.

What are sugar gum paste flowers?

Gum paste is a sugar based dough that can be used to make realistic edible reproductions of flowers and fruit. Gum paste flowers are formed by rolling out a small amount of dough and cutting out individual petal shapes. Then, each petal is shaped and formed one petal at a time, into a complete flower. I don't advise eating them since they may not be very tasty and the texture is hard and may contain wires to hold them together.

Will you make fake cake tiers?

Yes, but I charge the same for Styrofoam tiers as for real cake tiers. It takes the same time and attention to detail to decorate Styrofoam tiers, so the price is the same.

May I order sheet cakes to supplement my wedding cake?

Yes and no. I prefer to make "layer cakes" should you need to supplement the servings of your wedding cake. Unlike sheet cakes, "layer cakes" have the same wonderful fillings as your wedding cake. "Layer Cakes" are delivered in a box and are cut and plated in the service area of your reception. They are simply frosted and aren't decorated.

What is a groom's cake?

They are a southern tradition for grooms. A special cake just for him. Usually they are fun and represent an interest of hobby of the groom. Traditionally they are served at the rehearsal party but may also be served at the wedding reception.

Do you charge for delivery and set-up?

The delivery fee is based on the distance.

What are your deposit and payment terms?

I require a non-refundable deposit of 30% when your cake is booked. The deposit will be applied to your order. The balance is due two weeks prior to your wedding date.
